I have these two 1970S pennies and one of the S's looks closer to the date then the other one. Is this a mistake, or is this common? Any info is appreciated.
If you can use a magnifying glass and the camera to get a closer photo of the dates. There is a 1970 s small date with high 7 and a 1970 s large date with low 7. The Small date s (High 7) is 65$ in MS-65 all others appear to be .35 in MS 65. Hard to tell from the photos the difference between the two is very minor. Ref: 2008 Red Book
The one on the right is a large date. I can't tell about the one on the left. Irregardless, mintmarks were added to the working dies individually at this time. Consequently, the placement can vary from working die to working die.
The curl or the tail of the 9 on a small date will point towards the 7. On a large date it will point more towards the bottom. This is a hard date to extinguish until you actually see a small date in hand. From what I can tell from the pictures both appear to me to be a large date. Look at my previous post.
