    Mercury dime copy???

My girlfriend and I were out MDing for a while this afternoon when she located a nice 1942 Mercury dime. It is in great shape. I looked into this coin on the internet and found that copies were made. Can someon clarify this for me. Is this a real 1942 Mercury or a copy? How can I tell? If it is real, what would be the value of a real nice one?

    Re: Mercury dime copy???

copies of a 42 merc?! maybe copies of the 42 2 over 1 error, but not a normal run of the mill 42. a regular 42 in ms 65 is still only a $15 coin. it has to be for the error coin.

Sorry, I am real new to MDing and coin lingo, but what is MS 65? A 15$ dime isn't bad for 2nd day of MDing.

mint state 65. its a grade of coin, very high quality. here is a site that explains coin grading a bit and has some coin prices.

    Re: Mercury dime copy???

Can you take a really good picture of the date on the dime and post it? It could be a 42/1 error coin, which is worth a lot of money.

MS-65 stands for "Mint State 65". The Mint State means the coin is in the same condition, roughly, that it left the mint in. The 65 is a grading scale. MS grading starts at 60. They grade all coins on a scale from 0-67. There are various categories along the way, like "G", "F", "VF", "EF or XF", "AU" etc. G is good, F is fine, VF is very fine, EF is extra fine, AU is about uncirculated, which means it's in such great shape that it almost looks uncirculated. Then you get into Mint State, which is uncirculated coins. You also have "proof" coins, which are special strikes not meant to be regular circulation coins.

    Re: Mercury dime copy???

I think I can get a good pic up. I didn't examine it real close, but I didn't notice any overprint.I think it is a plain 1942. How would someone decipher a real 1942/1 Mercury from a "copy"?

I don't want to beat a dead horse here, but I am curious about the 1942/1 Merc dime. I saw one listed on ebay and it looks just like the one I have. I can't see the over print in the date. See it here

Let me know what you think.

    Re: Mercury dime copy???

Wow, the one on the right is barely noticeable. I hope to post a pic of mine today. Maybe someone will notice a flaw. On mine, the numbers 1,9,4 are perfect but the 2 seems to have "thicker" lines. I think it may be do to wear, but can't be sure after seeing the one in the last post.
