Stupid question...

Nope... from 1964 and back the halves were 90 percent silver. From 1965 to 1970 they were 40 percent silver. Since then they have been clad except for special issues like proofs. You won't find many of these in circulation at all. From 1992 on some S mints are silver, some are not. You can tell by looking at the edges. If it looks layered copper and silver, its a clad coin. If it looks solid, its probaby silver.

Another way to tell if you're still not sure, is by weight. A 1992 and newer S mint in silver will weigh 12.50 grams. A 1992 and newer S mint in clad will weigh 11.34 grams.

Hope this helps. :)

Any halves from 2002-present are hard to find, as the Mint did not release them for general circulation. The mintages are very low, and they're as hard to find as proofs. You've got a whole roll of 2003s... count yourself lucky, even if they're not silver!

Wow, just my luck I opened the roll. They were wrapped and labeled 2003 from US Mint. I should have waited for a response.I'm sick over this.Oh well. Now I know.maybe I can post them on Ebay.

Don't feel too stupid, not nearly as much as I do, cause I didn't reading this topic. I just turned in a string of 2000 -2006 halfs the other day.
