Well was hunting out at my moms farm in sw Virginia about a year ago and found this pretty much by luck. I've got a bounty hunter commando , and I'm loving it! Only thing is it dont go deep but on all metal, but it's pretty much payed for itself! I was looking where I always do got a good hit! Dug it up, it was an old light fixture.. I got it put it in my junk bag. Started to scrape dirt back in the hole, and out popped this baby! Figured someone wore it for good luck or something.

Can't tell the date on it, but you can make out republica de mexicana, and a few numbers I have no clue what they mean.

Well I'm on vacation, I will when I get back. I'm looking in the same place as I was then, made me think about it.Learned how to work this stuff now, but yea when I get home I will. I took these off my profile, and put on this forum. This is my yearly two week hunt in Virginia.

It's similar to many mid-1800-'s republic of Mexico coins. we'd need to see the writing on it and/or size.

Had to put it under my stream light to see it on camera. It's really worn out.

It's about the same size as a dime, thinner. Can't see a date but it does say 10d. 20g. On the side with the hat.

Had to put a flashlight on it to see more detail. I don't have good enough lighting, the coin is worn out, but you can still see some detail. I know 10d. 20g. You can see, and the eagle side says republic mexicana

The fineness of silver was measured in the medieval system of 'dineros' and 'granos'. 12 dineros was pure silver and each dinero was divided into 24 granos. Sometime in the 1800s Mexican coins (like yours) bore the inscription, 10 Ds 20 Gs; or .9028 fine.

Kind words, Don Jose, much appreciated. The coin is most likely a 1/2 real (16 mm versus a US dime at 17.9 mm). It's too large for a 1/4 real (12 mm and another design); and too small for a 1 R at 20 mm. This coin dates from the period 1825 through 1863. The design of the hat is termed 'a radiant Liberty cap'.

Thanks y'all. I really appreciate the info. Helps alot. I like to think some confederate ran down there after the war, but came back years later with a souvenir necklace. Or, a good luck charm brought back from the war with Mexico in the forties, an worn by the next generation as a good luck charm during the civil war. Ha, just thinkin out loud. But really thank y'all, I really appreciate it!
