1972 double date penny this morning.......

Am i just getting lucky or are these more common than i think. Started going through another box of pennies and i just came across this one.

Good find but no prize! The coin exhibits Machine Doubling on the Date only which is apparent from the Flatness and crisp, sharp edges. While the coin is definitely not one of the many Doubled Die Varieties that are known for the Philadephia minted Lincoln Cents and dated 1972, some folks collect and will pay a slight premium for the Machine Doubled specimens.

I have to disagree with huntsman. Looks like a legit 72 ddo to me. Could u take an up close view of the date. A top view of it will help.

Huntsman is correct. This is simply mechanical doubling. It is an extreme case that could bring a small premium to from people that don't know better. You can tell because the doubling is shelflike. it would be on the same level if a true doubled die. Also it takes away from the original design, another tell tell sign of MD. If you do sell it, please list it as MD.

Again sorry and you are correct, they are exciting to find! I have owned dozens of entire rolls of 1972-P, 1969-S, 1970-S, 1971-S, 1972-S, 1983-P and other Lincoln Cents that were Machine Doubled specimens. Most of these were finds that I made myself and a few were purchased that way. Some folks sell the Machine Doubled specimens on eBay as Double Dies, not Doubled Dies because that is not what they are and truly, they are not even Double Dies but they get away with it. However, even true Doubled Die Varieties are often even listed wrong on eBay as the true designation is Doubled Die not Double Die since the details on the Die were Doubled when the coin was struck! The most common Machine Doubled coins sold on eBay with a Double Die designation are the 1969-S, 1970-s and 1972-P Lincoln Cents but there are other dates as well. I refuse to mislead folks when I sell coins and have never sold a single Machine Doubled specimen coin as a Double Die or Doubled Die!

Agreed. A genuine '72DD has all the obverse lettering doubled, not just the date.

I never paid attention to varietys and errors before. Just loved finding older coins. Now since I added coin rolling I don't just collect the pre 82's, I look at each one. Time consuming but still enjoyable

you can either look at you are consuming time or timing consumption. Whichever way makes the cent-searching more fun.
