If you look at how shiny the "S" is compared to the coin itself, and the dark area around the "S", I'd say it's a very good chance that "S" was put there later, thus faked. A 1934S Peace Dollar is worth a minimum of $70. And that is why you got it for $23 from the LCS. It's still worth $23......

The S is raised and very worn, does not look like post mint tampering to me. That $70 min sounds like a coin trackers reference that I think is too high. 1934 S peace sell all the time on ebay from $25 - $100. Thank you for your opinion.

I disagree all around. Looks good to me, and these start out $25-30 all day long. In that condition its a $35 coin on Ebay.

Do you believe it is a 1934 S? That is what I think. Any thoughts on grade?

It looks VF20 and $23 is a good deal on any silver dollar, but please don't use cointrackers.com since they don't provide accurate values for coins.

If someone plastered that mint mark on there, that means it's a fake. I mean, it's a real 1934 Peace dollar, but all you can do with it is melt it down a get silver price for it. Collectors won't buy coins like that.

I don't know that it is or isn't fake, but if I were to forge a coin, I'd pick one in higher grade.

I have seen several Peace Dollars that have that darker shading around the MM, to me that looks natural. Plus the S mm is really only more valuable in the higher grades. At this grade the price difference between a S and P (no mint mark) wouldnt really make it worthwhile to forge. That having been said I have come across fakes of coins that would only trade at melt value so who knows!
