First check the weight and make sure it's not a Chinese counterfeit. If you're going to be buying coins you need to invest in a decent grading book and learn how to grade them BEFORE buying. Sometimes a difference of just a little bit in grade can make a huge difference in value. Had telling from just a picture but I don't like the way the wording on the reverse looks. Especially how the "ICA" in America seems to slant downhill. The "A" in States also seems out of place. Could be a trick of the camera but I don't like it.

Thank you for your response. I collect primarily Morgan dollars, this group included 9 Morgans as well as numerous coins that I don't know much about. I paid a price I was comfortable with for the Morgans and some war nickels. All of them check out, just never had a capped bust before.

I also agree with the ICA looking a bit off
Also the liberty is fully legible yet so much of the rim and other areas are worn- in my findings liberty is almost always the first to be worn- but im not an expert and have only a couple from a relative

Forget the Chinese. When this country was making Bust Halves it was the most counterfeited coin made. I know someone who collected counterfeit bust halves and had about 200 of them. I think your piece may be a counterfeit made right here in the 1830's or 1840's.

Can you post better images of this coin? You should also weigh the coin. I am not convinced the coin is fake, but would like to see the area of AMERICA better. The coin looks to be a net grade of VF, but it could have been cleaned, in the past, so that can hurt the value a bit.

Also it appears to be a Large Date variety and that would imply, minus any cleaning, that the coin would be worth $150 to $200. A nice find if authentic.

I'll try to post some better pictures tonight. I'm happy with the deal overall. 9 Morgans, 3 Peace dollars, a 1915 P barber half and about $5 face in other junk silver. And about 150 foreign which I'm still researching but so far another 3 oz of silver.

Did you buy it locally? or Online?

If the coin were mine, I'd be willing to pay the price to get it authenticated; a determination of whether or not it's worth between perhaps $150-$200 (as "CoinHelp" mentioned above); or worthless. And unless you got a 'steal' of a price (willing to risk that it is counterfeit), I would have insisted on a guarantee from the seller that it is authentic.

I'd start with a magnet, scale, and an acid test.
