Hi everyone.
like I have said before, I am new to coin collecting and am trying to work on my grading.
I picked up this 1881 on ebay and was a little surprised at the condition when it showed up
in the mail. I was expecting an EF coin and I think it might hit AU.
What do you think? I have a hard time with the grading once you get in the AU/MS grades.
Besides grading what else can you tell me about it.
There looks to be some machine doubling on the obverse and some extra metal on the rim.
How will this affect grading and value?
no matter what the grade is, I really like the coin. It has a real nice tone I just couldn't capture by photo and has great eye appeal when in hand.
Thanks

You are right! The coin appears to be at the least an AU-55 (slight wear on the Obverse but not much if any wear on the Reverse). The coin has Longacre Doubling NumisSociety - Longacre Doubling, A discussion not Machine Doubling. Also, the extra metal on the rim was apparently caused by the coin being struck slightly outside what must have been a damaged Collar. While a lot of coins have been and still are struck outside the Collar and suffer very little degradation of value, the extra metal is somewhat unsightly on this coin, thus lessening the eye appeal and could effect the overall value.

Thanks Frank. I had not heard of the Longacre doubling before.
Thanks for the grade too.

I agree with Frank. At least an AU-55 and a nice strike to boot!
