Do you think error coins are sometimes made on purpose to raise interest in coins...or are they all legitimate mistakes?

Many are legitimate mistakes but at the same time, I have seen hundreds if not thousands of man-made errors that were made to dupe unsuspecting buyers. Some of the man-made errors were very good but many more of them were poor attempts at creating an error that either does or does not exist.

I heard for a while people at the mint were either purposefully mis-striking, or taking coins that were meant for destruction home. It's long since stopped, but I believe that accounts for some coins that we collect today.
