Either a good camera or they're using a microscope.

if you have a smart phone you can get a app for the phone for $.99 (cents) that will crop your photos where the date will take up the whole photo if you choose to use it. Almost any digital camera will also have good cropping software. IMG_1881.JPG I phone photo

I take photographs with a Kodak camera and then once I load those onto my computer, I use a program called IrfanView. You can download that program for free and then crop and resize any photo. It works really well and I use it all the time to upload photos on this site. Obviously the sharpness of your photo taken by your camera will determine how well you can zoom in so remember that.

I think a lot of coin guys use scanners to get tight images of coins.

Or you can get a USB digi microscope, it's a lot cheaper than a fast macro slr lens.

There are (2) kinds of zoom with a camera: Digital and Optical. When you look at the specs of a camera you will frequently see something like "4x optical, 32x digital". What this means in laymans terms is that the actual camera lens glass 'zooms' at 4x. Then, when you zoom PAST 4x, the digital 'zoom' kicks in. When the digital zoom kicks in, the images is actually no more clear than if you had zoomed at only 4x, as the digital zoom is actually just taking a piece of the 4x image and 'enlarging' it to take up the whole screen.

What this means for you is: to get better images of small objects, you need better optical zoom. You can use a cell phone camera and a loupe (less than $10 on amazon) to get great images of mintmarks and dates. It takes a steady hand using this approach, but it's cheap and it works. The flat bed scanner is a nice alternative, assuming you have one.

Just for info here, I had the same issues with the addition of shaky hands. So, I looked around on eBay for a digital USB microscope. I found a Celestron Model 44302-B for $79. Price checked on Amazon, and bought it there for $52. Works great!

Here's the kind of pictures I took before. I'm still looking for the one I just took with the new microscope....
