I found this wheat penny in my backyard that seems to be made of or plated with zinc or silver. What is it?

Probably Mercury.

Strange this does not look coated, it looks like a steel cent...

Have you taken a magnet to it? 99.99% likelihood of being dipped in mercury or plated, but that tarnish does make it look like a steel cent (don't get your hopes up, it probably isn't). A magnet would let you know whether it is or not.

Agree, try a magnet test, then a gram scale weight measurement.

I do not have anything I could weigh it on that would tell grams, but I did test it with a magnet and it sticks.

If it barely sticks then plated.

It looks like it has been electrical plated. I have done this with a 1943 steel cent. Plated it with copper.
