Coin Folders for Beginner

My nine year old is interested starting to collect some coins. I don't want to make it complicated for him starting out. He's seen the coin folders and would like to start filling some of them out based upon what he finds in people's pocket change. As he continues to show interest, we'll get into more complicated collecting.

So, the question....can someone give me a list of good starting coin folders that I could purchase for him? I'm looking for folders that he would be able to fill from pocket change. I see some folders overlap on the pennies for instance and I'm not sure which ones to get.

The state quarters one would be a good start theres lots of them in circulation and would be easy to search for. That's just my opinion though

Good idea, and I will definitely pick that one up. Any suggestions for pennies, dimes, and nickels?

If you have a local coin shop or show, check the bargain bin for used folders. It's a nice cheap way to start.

Maybe get some coin rolls for him to go through, he'll have fun. Jefferson Nickels, Lincoln Memorial cents, or even the later Wheat Cent years (1940-1958) can be found in circulation.

Get the BLUE Whitman folders. They are inexpensive just in case he looses interest in the hobby. They can be found for all types: cents, nicks, dimes etc. Used folders as already suggested as a start-up idea would work out for now. HH & wishing him well in his hunts.

I went through this process recently. I suggest Whitman Folders. They are cheap ($3.99 each on Amazon) and are all uniform in size and shape, which makes them easy to store and/or put on a shelf. They can be a bit tedious to get the coin into the spot, but once in they are pretty safe. I would suggest starting with the State/National Parks quarters folders along with the Pennies folders from 1941 to present. The Wheat pennies from 1941 > 1958 will be a challenge, but makes for them to find something 'rare' and excites them a little to put in a coin in those years. Dimes/Nickels can be had from change, but not nearly as fun to the kids because of no real variety in designs through the years. Half Dollars can be fun, but hard to get in pocket change.

Half Dollars:
Kennedy Half Dollars Folder 1964-1985 (Hard to get in change for 1964-1970 years, because of silver content.)
Kennedy Half Dollars Folder 1986-2003

Quarters:
1. Washington Quarter Folder 1965-1987
2. Washington Quarter Folder 1988-1998
3. Statehood Quarter Folder No.1: 1999-2001
4. Statehood Quarter Folder No.2: 2002-2005
5. Statehood Quarter Folder No.3: 2006-2009 (This includes the 2009 territories as well. The Amazon descriptions are wrong now for this listing. Take note of the folder #6112 which is 2006-2009.)
6. National Park Quarter Folder No.1: 2010-2015
7. National Park Quarter Folder No.2: 2016-2021 (Just in case you want to 'future proof' yourself of having the same size/style folders)

Dimes:
1. Roosevelt Dimes Folder 1965-2004
2. Roosevelt Dimes Folder Starting 2005

Nickels:
1. Jefferson Nickels Folder 1962-1995
2. Jefferson Nickels Folder Starting 1996

Pennies:
Lincoln Cents Folder 1909-1940 (Wheat varieties ONLY, would be very tough to fill from pocket change.)
Lincoln Cents Folder 1941-1974 (This includes wheat varieties - won't be a lot of them found in pocket change but fun for kids to find.)
Lincoln Cents Folder Starting 1975
