Either way, this box was good to me. 54 BU 1960 Pennies, 22 wheats, 3/4 of the box was copper, and a lot of BU random dates :)

That's a very good box! Honestly though, what else could it be?

I agree, it has been plated.

That plated penny would have made me so mad. I would have thought that I found my first steel cent.

Could be a proof coin.

After some research, I found out this:

In 1960 some pennies were struck with Dime planchets. I'll have to test it for silver. If it turns out to be silver, it's worth $1000.

If that were the case there would be very weak details and a very thin coin, dime thickness actually. I don't see this on your coin. It's simply a plated coin.

dude - it's plated. dont waste your time. If there was a chance for it to be silver doing a scratch test or acid test would damage the coin and make it worth less.

Yeah, :icon_scratch:

Lots of people were coating coins with mercury in the 60's... I would not handle that coin and wash your hands well after handling it. :icon_scratch: :cross: Mercury is poisonous ! :cross:

Keep @ it and HH !! :hello2:

What's more likely....that it's a $1000 error coin that's been in circulation for 55 years unnoticed, or that it's zinc plated? Zinc plating pennies is one of the most common lab experiments done in introductory chemistry classes in both high school and college. I do this with my students every year. Heat it up on your stove and it'll turn to a brass plating.

Proofs aren't silver.
Sorry, I just went by the photo where it looked copper to me. If it's truly a silver finish, it would have to be chrome plated or covered by mercury.
