I've only been metal detecting for 2 years and this was my first silver coin; found it on a Lake Michigan beach just 2" down. Is this worth having 'cleaned and certified'? I've never collected coins before but this might be a good one to start with.

Congrats! That Merc is in nice condition for a dug coin! However, it appears to grade at around VF-30 without Full Bands, so no, it is not worth the expense of having it certified and graded. Being a 1919-S in VF-30 it could possibly fetch $20 to $25 or a little more on a good day. The values on PCGS' site are way off actual sales for similar graded coins.

Hello Tomnkari,

Congratulations on the Mercury dime find! I would leave it as it is and place in a protective folder. I do not believe it would be worth sending it off PCGS.

The coin being your first silver will always be special!

If you send off a coin that has been dug to get graded, the result may not be the best. It is still a very nice coin in very nice condition!

Not rare and not "problem free". Just enjoy the coin as it stands. Don't waste your money doing anything with it.

X2. Consider it a coin in nice dug condition and hold onto it. I'm glad your first silver is a beaut
