Beautiful coin - its a slider - a coin a dealer will buy as a AU grade and sell as a BU grade. It is really AU with original toning...

Not quite uncirculated, but right near there. Like they said, probably AU-58. Worth around $500. If in MS-60 condition, it would be worth $1,500!

The OP's coin, if slabbed at AU-50, MIGHT fetch $150.

It is not a strong AU, IMO. The large hit on the cheek and lack of luster holds this coin back and makes it a less than desirable specimen.

Nowhere near your $500 estimate...

I didn't think the cheek hit was all that bad considering the series. On a dime, yeah, pretty serious, but, silver dollars are notorious for bag marks.

In my very humble, non-professional opinion...AU Details, Scratches.

Jerseyben...

I said VALUE, not what it might bring. I believe, with your idea of it being AU-50, wouldn't bring $150 if slabbed in that condition. Based on PCGS United States Coin Price Guide, that particular coin in your thought value is WORTH $140.

Interesting point you bring up here..."value" versus "what it might bring". I believe the two are are the same; and that number can vary with time. Overall both, for these coins, will rise with time; sometimes beating the inherent rise with inflation, sometimes not. However, I still believe you have an "AU Details - Scratches" coin. Don't hate me, but, I think its value and its "what it might bring" is about $120"

The two are not necessarily the same. If there is a rarer coin, people will generally pay closer to the value if not the same. In this case, this is not one of the key dates in the series, therefore people might pay 50%-75% of the value, which, with my estimate being high, people would pay anywhere from $75-$110.

I'm guessing that the word "value" here equates to the "book value"; I could be wrong. In any case, if a book writes down a value of a coin of say, $100, and 30 people buy and sell that coin for $60-$70, then, in my opinion, the value of that coin is $60-$70. That is what I meant by the "value" and "what it might bring" are the same. When I'm looking at what a coin is worth, I look at what it's buying and selling at; I don't care what any book states.

Just curious.. Why would you claim to judge the value based on "what it is buying & selling at" and then not even bother to check before guessing the value at roughly half of what the rest of the word thinks ? Did you even look or just pull a number out of thin air ? Here is the real world value.. Somewhere in the $120 range on average give or take a couple bucks. Ebay "completed listings" are an excellent way to guage what the real up to date selling prices are. This is what someone could expect to get if they had this coin & put it up for sale. 1896 o morgan silver dollar in US Coins | eBay note that only the listing with the price in Green are completed sales. Asking prices for auctions that ended with no sale are meaningless.

It's AU 50 to 55. Some wear on the hairlines holds it back from being BU. It might also have been dipped at some time.

NHBandit, please read posts carefully before posting replies. Also, congrats on your estimate; identical to mine.
