I posted this 1879 morgan dollar a few weeks ago. I now think that the dollar may be a counterfeit coin. It only weighs 19 grams and looks a little funny.I don't think it is silver. I now wonder if it would be a period counterfeit or a cheap Chinese fake. It was found deep in the clay of the lake, deeper than I normally find stuff. The area has also given many different late 1800's items. Most everything I find is old except for pop cans and fishing lures. But people still fish and use the area. I would appreciate any information. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1439572781.148156.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1439572765.712941.jpg

Please show us a pic of the edge... does it appear to have a casting line around the reeded edge? Have you tried a silver test on it?

A contemporary counterfeit would be an extremely cool find IMO.

That reminds me of a similar coin I dug water hunting earlier this summer. Mine turned out to be a recent copy that can be purchased online for about $10 I believe. Talk about a letdown. Unfortunately, I guess you now know how that feels too.

It's hard to say when it was made, but I also agree if it's a contemporary counterfeit that would still be a cool find. :)

I agree with the others. Even though it seems to be counterfeit, its a great find.
