Just got this back

45 years ago ( I was in 8th grade ) a friend of mine stole some cions from out of my room. Last night was my 40th high school reunion and this friend came up to me and asked if I remember what he did. I told him yes and that it was a lot of silver coins that I would have loved to still have. One of the things he stole was an ash tray with a coin on the bottom. He had given it to his mom. A few weeks ago he was at his moms house and saw it. He brought it to the reunion and gave it back to me. It was given to me by my grandmother. My relatives came here from Germany in the late 1800's.
The coin is an 1855 Koenig. The ash tray is marked sterling. My "friend" said he polished it.
Any idea of where it might have been made and value?

Did you get your other silver back? At least he still remembered what he did and had the decency to return it. Don't know about it but its silver....that's a plus but the bigger plus is a family heirloom. Congrats!

Did not get the other silver coins back. They were long ago spent. I did just find out that this not an ash tray as I thought but a wedding wine tasting bowl. I will have to find out if my Great-great-great grand parents were married in 1855.

Even by itself the coin is a very cool one.

I would ask him to make good on the value for the rest of the theft ! Since you both acknowledge that he did it , come to an
agreement as to approximate value and he can darn well settle this . Just because 45 years have gone by , he is not less
culpable than the day he stole them . Additionally you just told us it was "a lot of silver coins " and that "you'd love to still
have them " Nuff said !

The bowl itself was made considerably later (between 1885 and 1900).
