While searching through a piggy bank of my mother in laws for wheat pennies I came across this 1960 d with a smooth back side. The outer rim is smooth also. Did somebody sand it down at some point or could it be an error? I have googled this year penny for errors but couldn't find any results.

If anybody knows what has happened or any ideas please help me out. Sorry about the quality of the pics. Taken from I phone. Somebody just ground it down. looks like a small portion of the Lincoln Memorial still shows in the center, no way this could have happened at the mint. People do weird things to coins sometimes!

Before you give up on this as post mint damage, I would measure the planchet thickness and compare it to another penny of the same year. That should reveal any grinding or sanding of the coin.

No need to do all that. It is what it is. Nothing in the minting process to make that happen.
