Picked this up at the silent auction at my LCS. Got it for $57 which was more than I wanted to spend but I had to have one of them. There was also a trade dollar one that I bid up to $175 then the lady that works at the shop bid $200 and I didn't have that much cash on me.

I've been wanting one of these for a few years now. Wish I had gotten the trade dollar as well. It was in amazing shape.

Am I seeing this right? A seated half, cut in half to make the picture locket? Very neat indeed if that is what it is.

Never seen anything like it.... $57? Nice score!

That thing is got to be worth more than $57. I have a trade dollar one I think they go for like $375. I'm not selling it because when I took it to the coin store it had my baby picture inside of it. I about passed out from laughter as did he! I think it's a 1878S maybe I'm not sure.

I would like that to go with my trade dollar one. That's pretty cool, is your signed by the artist inside of it?

I thought they were originally made as like a snuffbox to hide illegal drugs or something. I mean it definitely holds a picture also. But I believe there something else their used for other than pictures.

A guy had one this weekend at a coin store also. He said It felt weird and I picked it up, I could not get it open and he was looking at me funny. But I'm pretty sure that's what it was. Some foreign coin. I think I'll call him tomorrow and ask him if he still has it.

They also were made to store opium. Don't know which came first but they were used for both.
