Is this 1865 2 cent piece a mis-strike or just unusual wear?

When it rains it pours and today was no exception. I ended up buying a large lot of coins and that included my 4th 2 cent piece this morning.

I just finally got around to looking them up and noticed somethin odd across the "in God we trust"banner. Is it common for the word "we" to be completely missing but the remaining words stay so crisp? Is there a known error for that year with the motto?

If it was a modern coin, I'd say probably struck through grease. However, this is an old coin with raised lettering, and the letters could possibly have been worn off. Yet I don't know how they stamped the coins back then - so it's entirely possible that it is a true error. That might be worth sending in for authentication and grading - but I'd recommend hearing from a few other folks with more experience.

Awesome coin!!

It is normal, the "we" is a high point and the first to wear. Nice looking coin.
