Was given a Worn Atocha Coin

Today a random, but sincere stranger gifted me with a Atocha coin while I was walking at the southern most part of the U.S. (key west). The coin seems authentic. It's doesn't have the sheild, nor four circling spades. I saw an exact match, but gold. I know that a government wouldn't normally mint a coin in two different metals during the same time period. So what I need help with is...does it have a good probably for certification, or authenticity? Minted in silver or Gol

I noticed this was your very first post NewsBeeginur - so, Welcome Aboard! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

Go to the Spanish Cobs forum. The experts are there. The gold one looks fake to me. The silver? Was it the one the mold was made from? Weigh the one you have...should be 27 grams or so.

The fact that it appears to be identical to another one is not a good sign.

Today, of course, replicas must be clearly marked. But ones that aren't stamped "COPY" are still for sale on places such as eBay.

Probably made from a mixture of the updated composition of Pewter (85–99% tin, with the remainder consisting of copper, antimony, bismuth) and a fair amount of Lead (which was formerly used in Pewter).

It appears both the 'silver' coin that you received, and especially the 'gold' coin you found on the net are tourist reproductions.

Pushing a shopping cart down the street and wearing an odyssey marine tshirt should have been your first clues.

I've been to Key West more times than I can remember since a child. I also had more fake and COPY marked Atocha coins than there was a use for, but I was a kid at the time and it was good enough to keep me content and quiet...

Both are copies, but still a very nice gesture, and a cool souvenir.
