I have been going through some coins my grandpa had in a check book box with my grandma. He has been gone for 15 years, and it is neat to look at them with her and look at his hand written list of them. There were a few mercs, about 40 walkers and bens, etc. The gold piece is in pretty good condition, a little dirty on the back. Any grade guesses? The large cent was given to my grandma as a child by her aunt and uncle.

The gold piece looks nice! I would take them out of their holders and take pics from directly overhead. Hard to grade coins at an angle.

Both are common dates and have lots of wear. The Gold piece is worth it's weight in gold, but, not much more than that. The large cent is about a $10 coin.

In that condition, the $5 piece is worth about $325.
The large cent, although a little hard to tell from your pics, looks to be in fairly decent condition. I have noticed these older copper coins rising in value over the last year or so. They fetch between $20-25 in that condition in current market conditions. $10 is the going rate right now for any old large cent in "rough" shape (with a readable date/details).

Your Grandpa's coins are awesome to have and to hold the coins he loved.
I just bought a large cent in similar condition for 20 dollars retail.

I would definitely keep them in your family and hand them down to your children if you have any. Since they were handed down to your grandmother they will always make as a good conversation piece.
