I found these two Draped Bust dimes metal detecting. I found the 16 star 1797 in 2010 and the 1803 in 2012. I know, two Draped Bust dimes found in the space of 2 years might be a new land speed record! Anyway, both are pretty rough. I understand that the worn off date on the 1797 is due to a die crack that caused the plane of the coin to rise in the area where the date is. I also found the article below that estimates only 115 to 125 16 star 1797 dimes left in existence. Does anyone want to take a shot at estimating retail value for these two dimes?

Thanks Gary. 2017 Red Book AG-3 is $1000.00. I guess there is a demand even for the low grades. I just didn't know if it would be considered AG.

Steve in Pa, did you find these in old fields or old cellar holes areas ??
The 1797 was found in a pasture above a river crossing and the 1803 was found in a plowed field at an old tavern site.

Using the red book for pricing guide is like using a braille map to find your way. The only conceivable use of a red book is to see if your coin is a key date, needing further research for a more accurate price. This is obviously a key date. The PCGS web site has it at $350, $500, and $950 in AG 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Given the damage, I would be looking toward the lower end of that, but still... NICE.

I'd give the 1797 ; 16 Star an AG , even with the small 'X' mark on it's backside.

I'd keep those in the family unless an extreme emergency.

You are correct on the Red Book , Dealers & Shops drop their heads when I walk in with a 'Blue Book' lol

Also I thought that I knew coin's pretty well but AG 1 , 2 are new to me , 'well the scale has to start somewhere ' I guess AG-0 would be right above "POS" 'Price of Silver'. ???

Now i'm thinking AG-2+ on the 1797.
