What kind of damage would this be considered?

Yep and a significant one at that. There could not have been too many more Quarters struck with that Die before it totally failed (shattered). Nice find Liz!

Added: While not really very valuable on its own, if you were to find a bunch (5 or more) of Quarters struck with the same Die showing progression of the Die Crack, then they would likely fetch a decent premium. Sometimes you can find several or more Quarters struck from the same Dies in U.S. Mint Rolls or Bags.

Huntsman - if I ever get a decent scope camera, I'll post a series of a '58 wheat cent. I was going through my mother's coins and there was a roll (OBW) of wheats. One end was tails and the other had a '58 date. I was going to sell it on eBay as is, but, well, you know a hunter has to hunt. So I tear into on the hope that a nice '58 DDO would be found. No DDO was found, but the entire roll was BU. Really nice cents. About half way, I started noticing a slight hairline die crack running through the legend and into Abe's head. I called it my Frankenstein discovery, because by the end of the roll, the die crack progressed looking like Abe had a lobotomy by a mad scientist.

It might be a good idea to try to put them in sequence as to the Die Crack progression in 2x2's and in a plastic 2x2 holder page. You never know when such a collection will spark interest in a Collector when shown at a Coin Show and maybe a deal can be struck for you to sell the collection to them. Being BU coins will definitely be a plus if shopping them around. The only problem I see that you might have, is the fact that many Lincoln Cents in the 1950s and especially mid 1950's to 1958 were plagued with Die Cracks and/or Lamination problems in the same general area on the coins.

Right now, I just put them in a tube for later. Not looking to sell them, and wouldn't expect much from them. They have the eye appeal as expected from BU wheats. The progression as you described is what I thought was interesting. Some of the initial cracks were very faint but noticeable as I was looking for the DDO through a loupe. Then as a I progressed through the roll, the crack became more prominent to a point where a few look like a lightning bolt across Abe's forehead. Again, I wouldn't expect much in value, but rather a cool oddity especially viewed in succession. I plan to get a scope soon as I've been meaning to do a series of threads on some Ike varieties for the TNet community.
