Henning Nickels x 2.......

Finally had time to go through several hundred nickels from the 40's and 50's I've been hoarding for decades. To my surprise, this was among them.



New nickels weigh in at 4.9 grams on my scale. This well worn nickel tops out at 5.2 grams.

I also had an opportunity to purchase a small collection from a gent who, as a youngster, had collected coins with his mother some 50 years ago but never really had an interest in the hobby. Tucked away in the back page of a Whitman folder in an unmarked hole was this beauty.



Aside from finishing up a couple of other collections this year, these coins were the highlight of my collecting year.

Henning nickels are counterfeits. A fella in NJ minted his own with the dates 1939, 1944, 1946, 1947 and 1953.
If you do an interweb search of "Henning Nickels" you will find a great deal of info.............

Nice finds and thanks for the thread. I knew of the '44 without the large MM but not the others.
On your '47 is any other diagnostic visible other than the weight? Doesn't look like the R of PLURIBUS is visible to use that.

Very happy to be able to share.....thanks to all. The real irony is that I took them to my coin club Christmas party on Thursday and many of our members did not know about the Henning nickel. I've been asked to give a presentation at our next meeting.

Pete, the hole on the long leg of the "R" is visible on other dates, but not all. Other than a lack of definition and rim on the nickels, the best indicator is weight. The planchets used supposedly weighed 5.4 grams and nickels, when new, weigh 5 grams.
