Interesting early opinion piece about coin size and how it was harder to lose a coin that size than smaller coins. Not convinced that it is less easy for a baby to swallow however.

I suspect we find lost coins due to a large number of coin variables - conductivity in the soil, size, color when lost, mintages and local use in commerce. But I agree that tiny coins like 3 cent silvers and half-dimes could easily slip from hands, especially large calloused hands, in the wet, cold or dark.

the reality of the half cent, 2 cent, 3 cent, 20 cent etc. has a lot to do with benefiting individuals and good old fasioned "pork politics"... some things never change.

I believe reading somewhere, that these coins came into existence to help paying for postage stamps, there by eliminating large amounts of unnessary coin change.

Yes The 3 Cent Coin was minted for 3 Cent Stamps.

I Suppose the Half Cent was to help Stop
people from Breaking 1 Cent coins in Half.

No idea for sure on that or the 2 Center
