Looking for Grade opinions on my Draped Bust Dimes

I have been lucky enough to have dug two Draped Bust Dimes. At the same time, I have been unlucky enough that they are both in poor condition. From what I understand, the 1797 16 stars suffers from a die crack where the date is that raised the plain of the coin in that area and results in the date wearing off quickly. Even so, I believe it is still at least About Good. Thoughts?


The 1803 is a small 8 variety I am told. It is in better shape but suffers from a plow strike on the obverse. I would think this coin is in Good condition, but unsure how the scratch affects the grade.

It's hard to give a definite grade due to the uneven wear and damage (both impact and environmental) Personally, I would give the first one a Fair 2, and the second one a VG, but, both with a damage designation along with it. The value would reflect that, as both would be worth less that their grade because of the damage.

Cudamark thanks for your reply. I take it that Fair 2 is equivalent to About Good in the Red Book? I came across an article in Coin Week where the author estimates that only 115 to 125 of the 1797 16 star dimes still survive.

What I have found sending in early coins like these, they will come back "genuine - environmental damage". With no actual grade. And they still charge full rate. I was really disappointed when I did some.

Fair 2 is less of a grade than AG3.

Not planning to sell at this time but I'm sure the day will come. Was curious about grade and value though.

Hey Steve. I recently dug an 1803 H10 LM-1 which looks just like the 1803 dime but it is 16.5mm. I thought it was dime but it's a half dime small 8. The 8 is very small. It's the rarer 1803 H10 LM-1. The LM-1 had a very weak strike. NGC just sent it back to me with no grade but I didn't conserve it and thought it was a dime!! However, some of the other 1794 coins came back AU details.

1794 Liberty Biberty Caps

Also slabbed were two 1794 Liberty Biberty Caps. Both AU details. I'm just not sure what Sheldon numbers they are. I forgot to get NGC varieties+. Your dimes.....Best guess NGC Details G and solid VG on the 1803. I conserved the Biberty Caps with coin care and took them down to an NGC stand at a coin show in Sarasota Florida. NGC slabed 8 dug coins for me so far and I'm happy with the results. Dave

I know Draped Bust dimes were larger than later dimes, and maybe the half dimes were larger too, which may have been what fooled you. I'm too lazy to get off my couch and check my book to confirm the half dime size lol.
