Mercury question on reverse.

What do you think caused the flat outer ring on the reverse of this 1941 Mercury. Post mint damage, or grease on die at time of stamping.

To me, it does look like a grease error. But.. it is possible the coin was face down with the reverse exposed to severe wear. Mostly speculation on my part!

Thanks guys, no sense of melting it if it might be a greaser. Save that for the ERROR box.
