yeah I know the title sounds weird. but that is what this looks like. My son and I found it while going through some rolls. While at first I thought it was just worn, I took another look and it looks like the coin is mashed flat (for lack of a better word). could not really find any errors like this listed on any sites. is it possible someone could have done this on purpose to simulate an error. Could it happen by accident, maybe with something really heavy sitting on it? Perhaps heat?

thanks for looking.

you are looking at a 1982 copper plated Zink penny first year they made them.
looks like its just a bad coating to me,
i dont think it has a value as a mint error
nothing listed in the book.

It's deliberate damage. Coins achieve this look from being placed between two blocks of wood and getting pounded with something heavy.

Wow Vermontpackrat that one looks much more "waxed" than mine.

I am not convinced that this is a mint error. I have been known to be wrong before but I think this was altered outside the mint.

I agree that this is a post mint job. I guess a die worn pretty bad might do this but I personally dont think so.
