Fewer 1909 VDB cents were minted than 1909 so they are worth more BUT if it had the "S" mintmark it would be really valuable.

you all are hard core !! and such an inspiration to dig out the old garrett, my best coin is a toss up between two, a 1921 SL quarter in G and an 1897 0 barber half in VG the first (and only) of each i have found and both good dates. i hope the first seated dime i find will be a rare one, but even if its a worn out common date it will still be my favorite find

John,

That's a nice '61-O half and it has a very interesting history. The US Mint in New Orleans minted 330,000 halves before Louisiana seceded from the Union, 1,240,000 were minted by the State of Louisiana after it seceded from the Union, and 962,633 were minted by the CSA after Louisiana joined the Confederacy. Since all the coins were struck from the same dies there is no way of determining under which authority a particular coins was struck.

The most valuable coin I ever found is an 1895-P Barber dime, grading F/VF and worth about $400. I also found the S mint of this date, worth about $200. Sorry but I lost the pics of those two and both coins are in my S/D box right now.

Here's a pic of an 1875 quarter I found at the same place as the above two dimes. It's nearly BU and is a beautiful, frosty white coin.

HH All,

Jeff In Mass

Re: What's the most valuable coin YOU'VE ever discovered?

Ever hear the one about the guy who finds a really good deal at a swap meet? Well, it happened to me.... I found a box labeled "old coins/ tokens" and after rooting around in it, I offered the guy 7 dollars (he had it marked for 10) Inside I found a 1921 Mercury Dime, in pretty good shape! So I went around the corner where a dealer I knew had his display set up. I don't collect merc's (yet), and I knew he did. Turns out he had a hole that needed filling, so he offered me this 1893-O morgan for it. All in all, I figure it was a pretty good day!

About twelve years ago, I got an 1835 Capped Bust quarter in change from a coke machine. The machine was at my high school, so I guess some kid stole some coins from daddy's collection. I still have it.

When I lived in the Detroit area, I dug a XF 1936 Canadian Half. However, Due to my inept digging technique, I put a nice gouge across the front(screwdriver} Too bad. It was about A $ 100 coin.

Now a couple of weeks ago i got told mine was at $6,000. I ask another fellow who had the grey sheet and he said it was not even listed there. Small D 1843 $5 Dalonega. Could this be so?

All listings i ever seen were medium D, the only small D price was a book from 1960. Thanks for the info.

The new 2007 Red Book shows a Sm. Date AU-55 @ $4750. But I don't usually put much faith in their values. I believe in "Real World" Buy/Sell Prices. Is your's AU?

Joe

:-[Update: Stupito Me: I was looking @ the $21/2 Pc. Sorry!
