Name changed to protect the innocent! LOL
This is a real e-mail that I got. Gosh there is 10.7 million waiting for me! What should I do? I just cannot decide!~ LOL
I just love the very last line, "KINDLY NOTE THAT SOME PEOPLE (FRAUDSTERS) HAVE STARTED MAKING FORGERY OF MY GOOD NAME."
This traces to Japan. Why I didn't know that I was so popular in that country -that people want to leave me all this money.
Geez, I think that I'll play the Powerball tonight because I just feel so lucky! ROTF
Yes, I've gotten many, many of these with various clever ploys and silly proposals.

Modern Day Pirates working the Internet - looking for easy marks!

Dear Beneficiary,

My name is Dr.Kipper D. Snaacks, the deputy governor CBN.I was mandated by the President Federal Republic in conjunction with the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the Senate Committee on Foreign Debts Reconciliation and Implementation Panel on Contract/inheritance/compensation funds to complete all the unpaid Contract/inheritance/lottery fund. You are required as a matter of urgency to reconfirm your information including your name, phone number and your address for verification and immediate payment within 24 hours.

To this effect, the sum of TEN MILLION, SEVEN HUNDRED THOUSAND UNITED STATES DOLLARS (US$10.7m) has been approved for you. I wish to inform you that all matters relating to the release of this payment is now under my control and supervision. This development has become necessary due to the activities of unpatriotic government/CBN officials and impostors who keep on frustrating every effort to settle our clients by making requests for unauthorized fees and levies from them.

We apologize for any delay you might have encountered in the past; your payment is now 100% Guaranteed.

Kindly choose from these three modes of payment(wire transfer, diplomatic cash payment and ATM card). < :happysmiley: does that say ATM card? :laughing7:>

Best Regards,
Dr.Kipper D. Snaacks
Deputy Governor CBN

Note: KINDLY NOTE THAT SOME PEOPLE (FRAUDSTERS) HAVE STARTED MAKING FORGERY OF MY GOOD NAME.

YES...

BIG TIME...

About 25 years ago, my partner and I were dissolving a rather profitable Architectural Design Studio business...shortly thereafter, he bought into a 3rd World Airplane investment for $25K...

These email are actually quite genius.

They are self weeding gardens-

99.999 percent of the people click delete.

They are only looking for the one or two people gullible enough to believe it. With all the non-believers deleting, we did the weeding for them. Only a couple of sprouts remain and they begin to cultivate those.

If all of us answered, it would shut them down due to the sheer volume of mail.

But since we laugh and delete- the one or two they are after get through unscathed.

An easy way to look at is,if it didnt work sometimes,it still wouldnt be done.Send out 5000 emails youre most likely bound to get one sucker.Have 10 people send out 5000 and it will start to get fairly profitable.Have an organization of 100 people. It can go on and on.

yeah I figure they score on old retired people who are not Net savy, need money and not familiar with the ways of Net con-artists. And they score on people who are not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Please don't! They have enough scams coming out of Washington already. Yeah, like they need to learn more about scamming us?

Thankfully not everyone holds that opinion, and you are either part of the problem or you are part of the solution. I will continue to protect those not smart enough from their own ignorance.
Plain and simple.

Ocean 7 it was a joke.

I used to turn them all in, (been doing it since I got on the internet back in 1992 - different agencies here and there and all with the same result - the sound of crickets should play here) but unfortunately, they pay no attention to them ... or maybe they offer them protection - for a fee. In either case, these folks can operate with impunity because the law is not interested in putting an end to the problem.

well I have no way of knowing that it was a joke. I'm sure you might be very surprised what happens with some of these things but awareness of the problem is the only way the problem can be addressed. No, I don't believe they are being offered any protection but there are other measures that can be taken by people who have the resources, tools, and knowledge to dismantle an operation - no matter they may sit around the globe. That's about all i will say on that.

We can't stop 10 year old kids we knew were on the way since January from crossing our border. We have leaders who spend half a billion dollars for a website that the average design firm could have done better for less than one hundred grand ... and both parties are guilty as hell!

Our government, as a whole, has a bad case of head up. I've sent a copy of this book called "Pulling your head out for newbies" to each branch of government and the leaders of both parties, but not sure any could figure out how to open it:

Chadeaux you see everything has flawed and worthless. Well here's my theory and two cents on government. The baby boomers were too busy getting high and drunk and rich to give a rat's ass about anything for 30 years now. The X and Y generation have inherited a cluster F' and many of them just don't care because they figure it is hopeless and their world will likely end by war before they grow old.
The only hope for this country is this: if the baby boomers wake up and decide that they are mad as hell and not going to take it anymore; and they mobilize to change a broken government controlled by Lobbyists, large corporations, and foreign money; or dismantle and start over which may end being the only solution. As the baby boomers retire, which they have been for some time now and have lots of free time on their hands - they have the best chance of any group in this country to make huge changes towards some sanity because I do not see any other group that even has a remote chance at this point. There's one thing for certain, the drug addicts, the potheads, the drunks, the sex addicts, the porn addicts, the crazies and the insane won't accomplish much of anything because an addicted population really only cares about their next fix! And a drugged populace really doesn't care about anything when high. How convenient for the ones who run things!

About 3 years ago, I got an email from a cousin that lives close to Dallas, Texas. I had visited them in 2010 and knew their finances weren't the greatest. This email said that they made a trip to Germany. While there they were mugged and everything they had was stolen. All their money, travelers checks, cell phones, luggage, etc. had been taken. I was asked to send her some money to help them get back to the states. I called the cousin in Dallas and was told that her email had been hacked, again. No, they were not in Germany and never had been out of the US.

I decided to have a little fun with these scammers. I replied asking for information to assure me that they were actually my cousins. I got quite a bit of info back. All of it was correct. So I asked how much they needed. $1500 would get them back safely to the US. I said it would take a little time to get it together and asked where to send it. I was given a Western Union number. The next day they asked if I was any closer to raising the money. I said that it would take at least another day. In closing, I asked how her brother in Houston was doing. I got another email asking about the money. I replied something about the money was almost ready. In closing, I asked again how her sick brother was doing; that I had been concerned about him and couldn't reach him. I asked if his phone number had been changed. Next day, another question about the money. No mention of the brother. I replied that since she seemed so unconcerned about her brother that I was beginning to wonder if she was really my cousin or some scammer.

I only heard one more time from them. It said that she was concerned about her brother, but had not heard from him, and was anxious to get back to the states to check on him. That's when I made my play. I wrote that I knew that they were scammers from the start because I had talked to my cousin on the phone the same day that I got the first email. I stated that it had really been a lot of fun wasting their time and getting their hopes up that they were going to get some money. And since I am retired, I had been having a ball leading them on, and that the cousin had no brother in Houston. I also asked how they could possibly use the email as much as they had been doing if they had no phones, no money, no credit cards, etc.

I have been told that a scammer can send an email from his computer to a server that sends it to another server, that sends it to another server,............etc. and that the servers can be in several different countries. Therefore, it's extremely hard to trace such as this on the internet. I traced one scammer (don't know remember what he was doing) to an address in NY City. I tried to get him stopped. That's when I was told that although he may have been the actual sender, if he said he wasn't, then there wasn't really much way of proving it was actually him. I emailed him, told him what his address was, that I was contacting authorities, and asked him what he had to say. It wasn't very nice! I never heard anything more about it. I don't remember who I reported it to.

Chadeaux, if I'd had a way, the knowledge, of how to screw up their computer, nothing would have prevented me for doing so!! That would have the greatest thrill I could have had in my entire lifetime!

Another one of my cousins, down in Houston, got hacked few years ago. She's very religious; but likes jokes, even jokes about sex, as long as they don't involve incest, gay/lesbian, or cursing. I got an email from her that loaded with obscenities. I was shocked! Later that day I got a phone call from her. Yes, her email had been hacked. I happened again about a years ago. When I saw what was sent last year, I called her. She wasn't at home, so I told her husband about the hacking. He said she evidently didn't know it yet or she would have told him. I got an email from her the next morning, giving me her new email address.
I got hacked just few months ago on my email. My son and daughter both alerted me to something they received that seemed unusual so they didn't open it. I went in, changed my passwords, and so far, haven't had anymore problems. I sent emails to all on my contact list; but none of them got the one that the son and daughter got. That was lucky, I think; because I don't know what the 'hacked' ones contained. May have just been spam; but could have been viruses.

Hacked email accounts usually happen because the owner opens emails from folks he doesn't know or he refuses to use a secure password.

Can't help with the first problem, but the second problem is easy: Use numbers, lower AND uppercase letters, and don't forget the spaces and symbols.

After choosing your password go here: https://howsecureismypassword.net/

It will tell you how long it will take a single computer to crack that password.

In a perfect world, a different password for each email account (I know, not an easy thing for me either ... along with the other 30 or so passwords I need to remember!) and every online account.
