In this June 9, 2015 photo, James Lowe of Barnet, Vt., poses for a photo after a judge told him to leave the Caledonia County Courthouse in St. Johnsbury, Vt., for wearing prison stripes and matching beanie to jury selection.

Untitled.jpg

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont man has escaped jury duty — by getting dismissed for wearing a prisoner costume.
James Lowe of Barnet says he was released from jury duty on Tuesday when he showed up to court wearing a black-and-white-striped jumpsuit with a matching beanie.
The Caledonian Record reports that Lowe showed up on time and joined other prospective jurors before the start of the selection process. Deputies directed him to an empty courtroom to meet with the judge, who told him to leave.

Lowe says the judge told him he could've been found in contempt of court. That could've meant a fine or jail time.
Lowe says the juror instructions don't restrict clothing, but that he's happy to be released because of his work schedule and family obligations.

I see nothing wrong with it, he is intelligent enough to get out of something that doesn't make up for the time away from family and employment. If it compensated properly it would be ok. We all have to do our civic duty but make it right or more guys will show up in stripes

A while back I sat thru a jury selection for a drug trial of a couple gang-bangers, and we were brought into the courtroom in groups of 20.
The judge asked if anyone worked as, was a friend to, or a relative of anybody in law enforcement.
I said as a child I lived with an uncle who was the former Warden of a Federal Prison.
I was immediately taken into chambers, along with about a dozen attorneys and the Court Recorder, and confirmed giving names, dates and the like.
Was shown the back exit.

You spoke the truth and were not trying to get out of jury duty nor mocking the judicial system..

I have never had the pleasure of being on a jury. Community is to small. Do you know the officer? Yep! The defendant? Yep!
Dad you know I do...In my courtroom, you will refer to me as "Judge" rofl.gif

Dress Code

Jury service is a serious civil responsibility. Appropriate dress is required. T-shirts, tank-tops, halter tops, shorts and flip flops are not appropriate.
https://www.scd.uscourts.gov/Jury/guideline.asp#dress

That is for "Jury Duty" I see nothing for Selection

I've worn T shirts & sweat shirts & Jeans already for Jury selection.
honestly it is all I own, & I'm sure they won't spring for a dress Shirt & Pants
for a few hours till I get thrown out.

I got out of sitting on a murder trial last time by saying

"I will not find any Teen guilty who may risk a Life or Death sentence over an error in judgement.
Plus You discriminate against Smokers & all through the Day I'll be thinking
I need a smoke instead of paying attention . They invited me in a private Room.
asked me about my Health . what Meds I take. And told me I was excused.
I never heard from them again.
of course I let my voter registration expire so they probably took me out the jury selection
computer.

for something that is done by random selection, why couldn't I win the Lottery as often as I was called for
Jury selection :icon_scratch:

Selection is same as jury duty, your serve on or starting same day of selection..

I have been called 4 times but never selected. I am honest with my answers when asked questions.

I always tell the truth. I tell them my Brother-in-Law was a police officer killed in the line of duty. I think any suspect who has made it to a criminal trial is guilty.

Yes, I know that's biased and wrongheaded but that's how I feel.

See I think the opposite.

"Due to the fact everyone is to be considered innocent until proven Guilty, The police either
set the person up or are mistaken. or it was a forgivable accident"

which I'm sure no DA wants to hear either.
They want you thinking Guilty.

yes I'm a Defense Lawyers Dream.
if they don't mind Hung Juries.
because even if everyone else insists Guilty,
I'd be just stubborn enough to say "nope ! I don't see it"

"Beyond any reasonable doubt" means just that to me.

I need a time machine, & Front row seat to the crime.

again :( How'd we get serious in Comedy Central :(

Well then we hold equally irrational beliefs on the opposite ends of the spectrum. Either way, neither of us will likely be chosen to be a jurist on a criminal trial.
