Make sure you dig all signals, even when you think you know what's there!

Here is a perfect example of why you should always dig every signal that's consistent and repeatable. Hit an old hotel/house site from 1800 close to the historic Hudson River, got a VDI of 97 @ 12Khz dug a plug and out pops a aluminum can [emoji12] swung the hole again and still a VDI of 97 I'm thinking great another damn can! Took 1 more shovel full and out comes this old gentleman. Thank you dirt gods, well played.

First of all, awesome find!

OK. Now I'll be the dummy and ask - is that a quarter or a half? I really can't tell just by seeing the obverse (not the greatest numismatist around by far), but at 97 vdi, I am assuming half.

Also, I would think that even with the same vdi the coin and can would have a slightly different sound (even if the "tone" which correlates directly with VDI was the same), especially if the can was initially masking the coin. Cans have a squirrelly sound quality, though they do sound pretty good if a round end cap is still intact. A coin usually just hits solid unless pretty deep or at a severe angle. Do you recall if you really thought it was going to be can #2 or if you had a good feeling about the second target due to its sound? It is important for those new to the Deus to understand it is not all about vdi with this machine. The "quality" of sound (not just the vdi or associated tone) tells most of the story about what you are about to dig. Thanks, Austin.

Guessing by the size compared to the carbon fiber background, is it a dime?

Dime has no stars nor "In God We Trust" on the obverse. Instead, "United States of America" is inscribed on the edge around the head of Liberty. The obverse of the Barber Quarter and Half have (nearly?) identical designs.

Sweet find! Wish I found that under some of the cans I have pulled up.
Once I found a Coors Light 9 1/2" down! How did it get that deep??

Hey guys,
it's a quarter, the signal was banging on the can I knew it was a can because it was so loud and clean (full intact coors can, still a great signal after lifting coil) when I pulled the can I thought I had silver from the signal, not the VDI but the tone. It was a perfect crisp silver signal it wasn't as long/big of a signal as the can IE: I could tell it was a smaller target so my interset was peeked. The dues is a total tone machine once the sounds are learned and that will take you some time you should be able to tell what your going to be digging to a certain point.
It is a NO mint mark coin
:) can't win them all I guess but I'll take it!

"Hit an old hotel/house site from 1800 close to the historic Hudson River"

Did this place burn down 12-15 years ago by chance?

If so, I've stayed there several times..........hmmmmmm..........somewhere I may even have pictures of the interior still?

Regardless, great find!

I think it was in Kingston........possibly called The Black Lion??

I'd be happy to join you for a hunt, but I'm north of the border.

Perhaps my next trip through I will pack my CTX with me and give you a shout.
