if and when I get a HF coil, I plan to let my wife use my old LF coil to hunt with using the WS4 headset. I think that I understand that one can somehow transfer programs to this unit from the remote but they will not be able to modify them at all. I searched Andy's book for how to do this and if it is in there, I have missed it. am I correct in thinking this? I can then leave the headset unit dedicated to this coil just for her to use and use programs we like. When I would get the new HF coil, I would only match the remote to it. She is pretty excited to be able to use such a light setup. Thanks for any help. DL

Yes. Once the custom programs are loaded into the coil they stay there and can be accessed by the WS4. The WS4 just doesn't have the ability to modify and save programs (though you can make minor temporary tweaks to some parameters (disc, sens, frequency, etc.) on the fly). When I had 2 coils and 2 sets of headphones but only one remote, that is how I let the kids detect with just the WS4 and a coil.

A few things. It is incorrect to say programs can't be saved using headphone module.
Actually program data can be saved or deleted using the head phone module (solo).
See this link page 27.

I will add some more info here soon.

This were my experiences some time ago actually helping a gent with a Deus lite version (no remote) to actually use my remote to set his detector (coil and headphone module) up program wise.

thank you very much, another reason to ask questions. you guys have answered questions that many probably have wondered about. this helps me to understand even more the options that we have with the deus. also helps to know this for when the remote is out of pocket (like mine was a couple months back for repairs). the remote has dominance over the coil and headset module. you explained quite a bit really and thanks again. I hope others read this info also, it is very useful for sure

Good catch TNsharpshooter but you can't access expert settings so you are very limited in how much customizations you can apply and the process seems a little more cumbersome than using the remote, so setting it up with a remote if you have one is the way to go.

True. Remote the way to go.

Do you recall if headphone programming was a recent feature add with 4.0 or was always available? I never knew you could do that. We always just talked about programming other peoples coils (who had lite setups) with our remotes. I swear I learn something new all the time about this contraption.

This being able to save/ delete program using headphone module came about with version 3.0.

guilty too until now. so I figured that someone had to know something about it. I had tried to find info on the web but I'm a little challenged on that part.

In any event, dirtlooter, all this talk about programming using the headphones is a little academic, and as tnsharpshooter acknowledges, you can do what you want to do using the remote.

I went on a hunt today, actually had to quit to go eat lunch with the wife at work. But when I came back, I decided to see if the headset module retained the last program that I was using with the remote and I am pretty sure that it did. What I mean as retained is that when I started it up after the break (and using the remote), I believe it to be the same program as the remote had been. I just didn't have the pin pointer option nor had the VDI numbers where I could see them (which was okay with me). I had always thought (incorrectly) that you were stuck with the preset programs in the headset. it is nice to know anyways that you are not necessarily. Dug a clad quarter, 357 mag shell, 12 gauge headstamp and lots of pull tabs and rings. No, I didn't go into the menu and all of that to see what it said, haven't got that far yet.

If WS4 puck is Running In standalone mode it should give you VDI numbers on hits, but hard to see if you are still using the backphones. That's where the little puck audio output adapter comes in handy. You can plug a set of wired headphones into the adapter and keep the puck in a front pocket or mounted on the stem and detect away.

I have an adapter that plugs into the module and allows me to plug in ear plugs or a headset. The module stays in a small phone case that I attach to my shirt or overalls, it keeps it safe and dry. I could see that they have a module mounted on the handle but this set up keeps you free of being connected to the detector

Then you are all set, then. It should display VIDs on the puck when you are detecting in that manner. One good thing. The WS4 adapter puck is fully waterproof and submersible if you keep the charge port covers closed, so you don't have to be overly concerned if it gets wet.
