Use pitch audio or gold field. The pitch audio of either allows you to differentiate between large iron targets (shell frags) and small targets like nails (sort of like pinpoint mode). Longer pieces of barbed wire and strap iron are just an occupational hazard in this case because they will also appear to be large. There is no magic bullet here as you are searching for big iron amongst small iron. Sometimes larger iron pieces, especially if they appear flat against the coil, will ring up with low iron ids and high IDs that go below the wraparound range (i.e., in the high 80's or low 90's but < 97) which is a telltale clue. But unfortunately bent nails and coiled iron wire will do that also.
