Went out yesterday and helped a local fisherman by diving and retrieving 4 of his fish traps from 100 ft without charging him. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1422284824.066691.jpg

He then showed me the location of a shipwreck of a Haitian freighter, not an old wreck but a good trade and I know he will let me know if he hears anything.

Thanks Mack, I hope to be able to map some of the wrecks here so that when and if it's legal to either salvage or Archaeologically work them I can

Also a great feeling to help a guy not only save himself a few hundred bucks but also now he can make a few.....bucks, not traps ha ha

Good work! Fishermen guard special spots like gold. Some of those will be uncharted shipwrecks and you might be the first person to see it since it sank! You help them, they help you, everyone wins!

I have seen some incredible finds that have been "netted"...
I was at a flea market once and this guy walks up and says...
"hey are you the diver shipwreck guy" ?
and starts showing me pictures on his phone of what he caught with his fishing pole...
My mouth dropped open...
I could not believe it...
There he is standing on the back of a boat in obvious open water ...
holding...
A friggen ships bell... small one...
not just some bell either...
The pics weren't detail at all and encrustation prevent seeing any type of marks...
So I ask em... "where exactly did you "catch this"...
I mean the odds of this are 1 in a trillion...
So I am think its bull... that he dove it...
but then he starts showing me pics of him taken by his buddy of him pulling it onto the deck with...
his Penn Senator rod and reel combo with 100 lb test...
So he says he wants to show it to me to see what I think...
And I start telling him about how valuable this could be...
and this is an artifact and to be careful about who you tell and where it is etc...
and he starts getting a little... ehhh whats the best word... shifty...
he takes my phone number and tells me he will call next week...
never heard from him.
Now...
the first thing he told me when I asked him "where did you find it"... was...
where he found it... heh.
but so vague... and no where near me... but still cool.

ARRC,
From your previous posts, I definitely know you are smart enough to string him along, was this a moment of madness, a drunken slip or you just felt sorry for him......sigh, oh well, back to the drawing board ha ha.

You made a new friend - those fish traps are expensive to replace. Fishermen know more about whats on the bottom than anybody. Many of the 1715 wrecks here were located by information from local fishermen.

The reef of silver bars of the Atocha was so full of fish hooks it took them two weeks to clear them off! One guy who had been fishing that spot said he'd been doing it for years. The fisherman are definitely a good source if they are willing to share their info.

I was not surpised a bell/possible wreck was found...
I was surprised HOW it was found...
To hook that bell just right...
For the line not to break.. etc.

Wreck sites are not my problem...
I have spent most of my life in Florida's waters... I know a few unknown sites around state actually...
Was not familiar with his particular area as a possible wreck area...
but location makes sense...
Furthermore... I think the guy upon realizing the gravity of his find... froze up.
He did not come across as a "dumb" guy... so when he heard the seriousness from me...
he clammed.

This is true - Capt Syd told me about that. If only they knew what they were snagging their lines on.
