    Vertical compass

I've seen and read somewhere about a compass that is carried at your side verticaly(instead of held horizontally) and used to detect mineral deposits. Are these a special type of compass? as I don't see how my liquid filled hiking compass would work. Is the compass used as a pendulm?
    Any info appreciated.
