I have offered several books for people to read and I thnik only one person has ever read any of them. I just can't imagine why anyone who is even slightly interested in dowsing would not jump at the chance to read every book available. I go back every now and then and re-read all of them. I learn something more every single time. Currently I'm on "Energy Matter & Form" by Allen, Bearne, Smith. This is a good one. It has many references and tons of good info. Yes, it's college level reading but I'm certain anyone who can read this forum can learn something from this book. You can get a copy at drhills.com And when you have read it, go back later and re-read it. I've read quite a few dowsing books and anything that Christopher Hills (editor) is involved with (these are his students) is worth your time to read. Don't listen to the naysayers who claim books are bad. That's just nonsense. Know-it-alls cannot learn. Their ego gets in the way.

It's odd, but I haven't seen anyone say that "books are bad," Mike. Where did you read this?

Hello Mike.
I read alot of books on the physical, metaphysical, paranormal and brain physiology but i don't need to justify my my dowsing ability. I'm sure I havn't read the same books as you, but I know what I feel when I'm dowsing. So why should I need to read the books that you suggest? I don't need new mind powers to do what I do. I found out I don't need a witness chamber or loaded rods. What comes to me I feel in my bones. Thats the only way to describe it. When I hit a target I feel it all over.

my body and mind is a detector of sorts -- thru thinking and "feeling" by opening myself up both mentally and phyiscally -- I often find very interesting things --without a bunch of gear --now once thru research I find a good area -- I go to it and look at it getting a "feel" for it --- I think ---ah the wind here comes mainly from the west -- to keep dirt out the main doorwou;d not be on this side -- but on the other side --I "open" myself up as if , I was to live there during that time --in my "minds eye" --I think of me living there ---wheres the well or nearest water? --the path from home to water will be heavily used , ---look for odd out of place plants --humm a batch of roses in the woods ? --or fruit / nut trees? (read homestead) -- one must not just look at things --one must "see" whats really there.

now once in the zone --I fire up the metal detector to assist me as well --its a combo approach that serves me well.

WC, why should you read the books I suggest? Because you just might learn something. Dowsing is a lifelong quest to perfection. If you think you are perfect then you are not going to be improving your skills. You stagnate. I guess it has to do with your level of enthusiasm. As I said these books are just loaded with wonderful iinfo. What more can I say? You can lead a horse to water but you can't make 'em drink.

Here's my take on it.....

I'm a very logical person.
I'm scientific.
I cannot simply live with "It is just because it is..."
I gotta know WHY...


I cannot explain dowsing - but I've done it and I profess that something that I cannot explain is at work here.

My father has a friend in the HVAC & septic/plumbing business.
He uses simple bent copper rods. More sturdy than a hanger and slightly thicker.

I've used them on MANY occasion when I DID NOT know where the water line below ground was. In many cases, there was a line a good distance from a home so the line could have been ANYWHERE along the swath of land we were dowsing.
I cannot explain it - the rods found the line EVERY time......exactly.

Trips me the 'eff out!


It will find the water........but treasure? Caches? I've never seen/experienced it.

I would be willing to wager they could have thrown lawn darts and had the same results. Most people in the trade

I'm not in the trade.

Many times the line is not 'near' a residence or road or clue.

Though I could have been a bit clearer.
My Father's friend is in the trade. He uses the copper dowsing rods I described. He's brought them by my house and I have, on occasion, tagged along to see him work.

They're his rods.....not mine.
I have no trade knowledge. I would describe myself as a skeptic of this dowsing phenomenon. I sorta still am in that I cannot see the connection. I cannot link the logic or science to it. He even had me use them with my eyes totally closed.
The rods found the water line (or the iron pipe??) every time. But then, I remember one time the pipe was that white plastic PVC stuff.


It fascinates & intrigues me.

My oldest brother, Mike Jenkins worked for the phone company. He died of cancer a couple of years ago. His job was to locate buried cable when other construction companies were digging near them. He had sophisticated cable detecting equipment on his truck, but he told me that he never used it. He would douse for the buried cable. He did it for many many years. He was an interesting dude too. Had more friends than anyone I have ever known. Anyway, he would use those construction "flags", wire markers with the little flag on them. He said they were a little too long and he would always clip about 4 inches off the end of each. I dont know who taught him this, but he used it all his life. He was a terribly honest man and would never boast or lie about anything like that. He was 55 when he died. I know it works.

Interesting that you've noticed that the pvc pipe didn't seem to be a limiting factor. This has been shown before where dowsers were tested to locate water but the water source was not flowing. In order for the majority of amateur dowsers to get a response to water, it must be flowing. The pipe material is then irrelevant. Perhaps a master dowser can dowse still water, much as any other target; I do not know for sure.

I agree with Mike wholeheartedly that solid reading on dowsing is insightful and fun. The only drawback to it Mike, is that sometimes it can damage your dowsing success; as it did mine in the early stages. Belief systems are dangerous things to mess with! Sceptics will of course pick up on the 'belief' aspect. Perhaps some more reading on the cutting edge of biology would then be in order. Go to

HI OleDavidBoy, no I was picking up on Gary's contribution. Nice to meet you. I've re-read yours and I completely agree. I would accept the word of a man / woman of known high integrity over conventional science any day. Blood is thicker than water etc. Our own perceptional skills may be as well honed as an 'objective as is possible' scientist working within current conventional understandings. Can I repeat my dowsing under experiment? I don't know and I have legitimate concerns about 'intent' as do other dowsers who are challenged to be tested. Have I seen dowsing go beyond pure chance to uncover previously unknown (but predicted) facts? Yes. Yes, I have.
