First attempt at dowsing for treasure

I've been map dowsing for a while now, but never attempted to dowse for treasure or anything else for personal gain. I thought I'd give it a try - what the heck, right? I began with a Google Earth of my property - it was part of a large plantation/farm dating back to 1790. I asked if there was treasure buried on the property - got a definate NO, I asked if there were coins buried on the property and got a YES. I asked if there were gold coins buried on the property and also got a YES - so, that really began to peak my interest. I asked how many coins and got 25. I began a grid search and narrowed down a spot out in a pasture. It was about a 100 sf area but I could identify the location from rocks and trees. I sat on this for a week or so and today decided to get out there with my Whites TDI and my rods. Right away I got a very clear loud signal with the TDI and started to dig - the ground was hard packed and like digging in concrete - I only had a small digging tool and chipped away at it - at around 3" I found the target - a 1" piece of wire. That TDI picks up EVERYTHING. I stopped and took out my dowsing rods and kept getting an indication of gold in that same area. Back to the TDI - another sport a foot or so away from the other one - piece of a T-Post down around 5". Checked again with the rod and got the same reponse. I was getting a little doubtful around that time but went at it again. Another couple of feet and another loud clear signal on the TDI. I dug a good 6" down before I saw what looked like a metal hinge in the hole - after much more digging and clearing I pulled out what appears to be the top lid of an iron box - Photo attached. This piece is old - might date back to the 18thC or up to mid-19thC - hand wrought iron and heavy. I could see remains of more iron in the hole but it was getting late and I had blisters in the palm of my hand from digging - damn that was hard dirt. Anyway, thinking I had got whatever there was to get, I took out two dowsing rods and walked lines over that hole - just below the area I had dug those rods crossed each time I went over it. This might have a happy ending - if I can get a backhoe in there! If anyone has seen a hinge like this, please post about it.

Thanks Dell - I posted the photos on the "Help ID" forum and it has been identified as a curry comb which now makes sense since this area was the possible location of stables/carriage house on the farm that was burned by Union troops in the CW. Guess looking for gold in that spot would be pretty useless then. Oh well, practice, practice, practice - right?

If you want to be right on the spot to find gold. I use a hollow chamber with screw cap and put piece cheap gold chain in the chamber and attach to the tip of the dowsing rod only use one rod to work with! When you over the spot the rod will hit you on your shoulder area !!I have used a metal detector to pin point it better in all metal mode. ps I have done this with gold and silver and found item's made with gold and silver
