As a generality - finding accessable water underground by use of a willow or other sapling. Has expanded to finding objects using rods or other devices.

May or may not work - but I believe it is beyond science if it does.

Approach dowsing with an open mind. Does it work? There are those that swear that it does. The U S Gov did a study and concluded that it does not work. Dowsing is one of those things that needs more study. Try it. I am not a proponent of dowsing but I'll be the first to hail it if it can be proven to work. TTC

Funny when you look at the Google Earth images people submit to the Dowsing forum asking for indications of treasure. Several people will provide their results, and they always are different. If dowsing was a reliable method to find treasure, then:
1. Wouldn't they all be the same? And,
2. Wouldn't they all be rich?

Yes, and yes. Just like LRLs, they always seem to pass up fertile ground to find the tiny gold when the entire area is producing gold. A certain individual claims his LRL can find gold 5 miles away yet he says he will not walk that far to get it. Hmmm. TTC

I once did tech work with a plumbing company. Their service plumbers would dowse for water pipes underground. They would come to the shop for the metal rods and not think anything odd about it.

In the southwest a bank loan ( at least at one time ) can be obtained on the word of a dowser that water was available.

My understanding is in India no rods or sticks are used. The dowser will grab their belly as if they are having cramps when they detect water.

I might try it to see if I've got the gift.

im confused as to what dowsing is

Hey radbro, I have been dowsing for about 2 years. I started out dowsing old homesites. I can dowse the area and draw out lines in the leaves or sand and show where the original structure was at. Dowsing picks up on the energy left behind by the human touch in this situation. I now am dowsing graves. I get a reading and can determine whether an infant or an adult is buried in the area. I also can determine the gender of the person buried. Don't let naysayers influence your assessment of dowsing. In Tennessee, we know that dowsing works and has been used for centuries. I have found that not everyone can dowse and I believe that just believing is 99% of making it work. I have also found arrowheads while dowsing. Just find two wire coathangers and cut them leaving about four inches for the handle. I put my handles in straws so that my hands are not manipulating the rods at all and others can easily see that my rods are moving on their own inside the straws. Practice over and over and simply think about what you are looking for. GOOD LUCK, Two bear

There's a dowsing forum on T-Net that may explain it more.

Umm...it's a grave. How do you know you're right? You can't dig 'em up. ;)

mine are simpler . Just rods with small copper tubes at the hand holds . And I use a dosing pendulum that I picked up in Salem mass several years ago . I'm more partial to it . It just feels better to me .

Yes…That was me….Would you walk five miles to recover a few flakes off Gold? I did not use that one again…I bought one that I can control the distance, depth and the size it will locate….Art

I start at one end and the rods cross. I walk until they uncross. Of course an adult will be in the five to six foot range and infants and small children will be in the smaller range. There are numerous old cemeteries in the smokies and I like to dowse them for their privacy and quietness. I started out just dowsing the gravesite and not looking at the headstone if there was one. After determining if it was and adult or small child I check the headstone and verify the age. You can also hold one rod at the bend and hold it over the area where you think the chest area is located. Hold the rod and let it dangle on one finger. If you are in the right area around the chest area it will make either a clockwise or counter clockwise circle. For me, a clockwise circle indicates a male and counter clockwise indicates a female. I do this and determine the sex of the gravesite. Then I simply check the headstone for verification. It works for me everytime. Of course I never have any intentions of digging up a grave but this is just one of the many methods one can use with dowsing rods. One can also find a lost grave with no headstone as there are many in the smokies. Sometimes a headstone was not placed on a grave or time itself has removed the headstone or vandals have removed them. Try this on your own. With a little practice you will see.

Are you ever wrong?

seriously, NO

Wow. What kind of things can you find? Dowsing is usually about water, right? But if you can find where structures and graves are, could you find, maybe, other soil disturbances? Say a buried cache? If you can find a dead person under ground, could you find a live one? That could be a great thing to help law enforcement who are trying to find a kidnapped child for example.

I was training under someone who told me that anything that has been touched by a human leaves energy that dowsing can pick up on. Of course a live person will do the same. One can also pick up buried caches, gold, silver, and even things untouched by a human. That is how people find gold that has never been touched. Dowsing is mental. I have found arrow heads while dowsing, water pipes, old structures that have left no clue in the woods. Any soil disruption can be picked up if that is what you are looking for.
