Okay, Start from the "begining"

I had heard of this unique ability as a young boy. I'm now 57 this year and never bothered to learn anything about it. My "elders" back then had a very strong belief in the ability, and as I recall an uncle of mine located water quite well with it.
So......Some knowledgable person please tell me all about it from the begining. Preferably from the pro side first, since I'm quite capeable of finding my own scepticisms and questions for things I don't know about.

That's just it. The reason I asked to
start from the begining. I don't know the first thing about ANY of it and would like to learn more about it......at least basically. I didn't know it was divided in to surgical specialties...... But then I used to play with model trains too until the technology outstripped my fundamental brain power.
So what gives ?
