Jesse, I did talk to Bob about putting a damper on it and he said it wouldn't do much because at the top of the flair where it enters the sluice there's a piece of metal at the top that is bent to turn the water flow back down and any material in the top of the water column would be redirected down. Let me know if you try it and the results.
