White goop on suits

Hi...I'm hoping someone can answer I question I have about the dive suits that are worn for underwater dredging. What is the white goop that they put on the suits, on the legs and the hands for diving into the ice..

Don't they make a better one winners up in Alaska? More insulated makes it a dry suit anyways.

It is probably a lard from an indigenous marine animal.

Sorry I forgot to mention you definitely want to leave a 6" x 6" square on your back which is free of the " lard grease" bc otherwise your skin will suffocate and ultimately die, you should have someone with you as you are dawning your wetsuit to ensure that this is done properly, here in NEPA we use Cisco for dredging operations deep into the winter... hope this helps.
