no, that would be pretty useless. It's designed for taking bites of soft sediment in slow moving water. Soft sediment rivers don't have gold. You would want to be sampling gravel bars and areas with more flow. If all the gravel has already dropped out, so has all the gold. I don't see this as working well with gravels, too much to clog and hold the base open, which would allow the flowing river to wash out any possible gold before it ever broke the surface.
