I want to make a vacuum fed drywasher

I have had this idea kicking around in my head for some time. I started in to the project this evening and realized why nobody has done it yet. It is easier said than done. I have a bucket head vacuum. I thought, naively that I could just core a hole in the bottom of the bucket and, in the right position I could vacuum dirt up, and it would drain through the hole I cut in the bottom of my bucket straight into the hopper on my drywasher. The problem exists in the design of the vac. It uses the seal of the bucket itself to create suction. With that said, when I cut the hole I lost 95% of the suction through the hose. This is a major dilema. I need to do some research on vacuum's, their construction and design and see if I cant find a model that doesn't use the catch basin for pressure. Or maybe even possibly consider using a dredge type redirection nozzle. I'm not sure that would generate enough suction, although it wouldn't hurt to try it.

I am all ears to any and all ideas.

Why would I want this machine?

Anyone who drywashes, or even sluices and prospects knows the back breaking labor that goes into this hobby. But, where I feel this would really shine, and save "some" back ache....is when you are digging in one of those holes that somehow ends up below your knee level. You are trying to shovel dirt with your arms extended below you. Trying to pull up that half shovel of dirt to put in your bucket to classify. Imagine only needing to vac the dirt off the big rocks, with hardware cloth on the tip of your nozzle, classifying to a desired size before any dirt goes into a hose directly to your drywasher. That is my goal. Not sure if its possible. I am looking into it. Again, any and all ideas are welcome. I'd like to see this a reality. I called Keene today to present my idea. Nobody in product developement was able to talk to me. Left a message and never heard back. I am not looking to pattend the idea. I dont have money for all of that. Nor do I want royalties or any kind of recognition. I just want to see it come into existence. It sure would be handy in my mind.....a waterless dry dredge.

Pak Rat did just that-bankrupt but proof that it is possible. Kinda wish I'd a kept the unit I resold in my store in dayz of old but kids DO require massive amounts of cash for a single Dad. I'll look in old files to see if I have any details on construction but that was looooooooooong ago. Oops try the old mining series a books called POPULAR MINING(bankrupt) as they had do it yourself to the max-John

Two ways to make that idea work:
1- use plastic tube and connect vac motor to enclosed fan blade in tube to create draw at bottom
2- use special device ... collar that creates vortex airflow at opening .. special spiral design .. expensive but works .... saw unit that would suck in scraps of recording tape once. do search on VORTEX ... also similar unit uses air pressure to produce COOL air for Haz-Mat suits where you are connected to air line in chemical environment or confined space.

Re: I want to make a vacuum fed drywasher

I personally have never used a vac or dry washer but an idea did come to mind. Could you use the vac as a hopper with a long hose for suction. Now here's the tricky part. Have some sort of air tight "trap door" at the bottom of your bucket/hopper that you can open and drop the material into your washer when it gets full. This would save you from carring the bucket around.

    Just a thought. Good luck.

The use of a star valve , will keep constant vac. plus it will take material out of vac. and feed to hopper......george

Re: I want to make a vacuum fed drywasher

I finally have my prototype idea semi made. It is functioning but I want to change the suction hose. My tests were done with typical drywasher hose. I cant share any pics because I am looking to patent the idea. I will say I envision a way not only to tumble and possibly crush rocks, but to vacuum dry material and feed it directly into a drywasher. If I only had investor backing. For now I will classify on my vac nozzle and place material straight into my drywasher hopper. This contraption will shine while working deeper holes where climbing in and out isn't any fun as well as moving around crevicing and cleaning caliche The Desert dredge?

Jack, being from Apple Valley and going out to Coolgardie, 29 Palms, Holcomb Valley on a regular basis, I hear ya. No fun digging like a dog, I am getting to old for all that. When you get one together, holler at me. I will be only to happy to try one out.

I LOVE THE IDEA AND CONCEPT!!!!!

Actually Russau, and it makes me sick to say it, but they are doing what they were elected to do and that is the problem. The people who would fight for our rights are usually the ones who don't get elected. Just look at your governor or for that matter my governor, both are farrrrrr left liberals who no matter what they say could care less for the unwashed. They are narcisists who care only for themselves and their place in history. On top of that they are socialists who although it has been proven that socialism does not work continue to push it on the people because they have the power and to hell with the people.

Until we bury these clowns under the debris of their collapsed socialist regimes we have to wage these wars to keep whay few freedoms we still have.

well i guess we will just have to agree that we disagree! i feel these socalled "representatives' the we elected and reelected into office ARENT representing the very people that they swore to represent! they (and i mean all of them) represent their political party! and ive seen it happen many times that they dont always go with the vote/majority of what the people want! so i have NO use for them as is! sorry for the rant, but thats how i see it!im done!

    Goodaye Jack

Have done this in a small way, used a Ryobi garden leaf blower which also has a suction bag and goes into reverse. $170 dollarsUS

I think the longer the feed hose the more pressure and power you may need?

I am visiting AZ for a few days, and was poking around on craigslist and found this...
    "e-z pikens dry dredge drywasher,
i have an ez pikens dry dredge....the machine sucks up dirt and drops it onto a vibrating riffle tray ( no blower to blow your fine gold away)...all self contained on a back pack frame.its like a dry washer and gas vacum all in one..$600..."

Yep that's what I thought of when I read Jacks post

Sometimes I use my gas powered vac to suck up material and then pour the bucket out into a hopper.
Usually into the hopper of my high banker or trommel.

Haven't done much drywashing but plan to one of these days.

I do know that you can run air from an air compressor into the small intake on a suction nozzle and it will create a powerful vacuum at the nozzle, then just run the discharge end of the suction hose into the hopper. Don't need a patent for that.

I think I've found a way to make my vac fed drywasher. Check out this video at 3:13 they show how dirt is vacuumed up the mine shaft straight into a truck. . Just need to design a smaller portable unit with the same functionality.
