From Minelab's website:

An important update on the Detect Modes…

Previously we have stated that Park, Field and Beach would run in multi-frequency and that Gold would only use the single frequencies of 20kHz and 40kHz, giving better results for gold nugget hunting. Our ongoing collaborative field testing feedback from around the world has resulted in further improvements to Multi-IQ to the point where multi-frequency is now the best option for Gold Mode as well, and will be the default setting.

Please refer to the revised Getting Started Guide for updated product functions.

If "multi-frequency is NOW the best option for Gold Mode", then does that mean that some earlier units shipped with an older programming using single frequencies, and newer units ship with multi-frequency as the default? I guess it should be easy to just select multi-frequency and save it to the Gold profile(s), if your machine is set to single-frequency.

Or, has Multi-IQ itself between tweaked recently? If it has been improved, how can one tell if they have the improved version?

I've been on the website and have not found anything regarding software/firmware updates.

Nope. The last minute change partially resulted in the delay of the first units. All production units shipped with this update.
