First time out with the Nox 800

I started detecting back in the 70’s with a bounty hunter, my latest detector was a bounty hunter tracker 4, now that I’m retired I figured I’d update to this equinox 800, I’ve been keeping an eye on this machine since the day they released it. Took it out today to a modern day rendezvous site and wow, does that thing find coins or what, very easy to use right out of the box, alls I did was ground balance and go. The ground is starting to freeze here so some of the targets were encased in ice. There’s a lot to learn about the capabilities of this detector and I’ll have all winter for that. Yep, the Equinox is a coin slayer! I've ran mine in all different settings and it seems to find the goodies no matter what.

I set mine up today the way Dirt Fisher on YouTube does for coin hunting in park 1. Hopefully I’ll have a week or two left of hunting before the deep freeze.

On the 800 if you have never used a Minelab detector, then just use the standard modes and after you get some hours under your belt (50 or more) try hunting with bins. Better than using discrimination and can compensate for some slight hearing losses if you have them. After buying my 800 in March 2018, I am now confident in using it and quite so envious of those with more expensive detectors like the CTS. Quite satisfied with the 800 finally. But in the early days I wondered if I had bought the wrong detector for me. The narrow TID range 0-40 was tough to deal with at first, but now dealing with it.

Pulltab, when you say try hunting with bins do you mean notch discrimination?
So far I’m very happy with the nox, I’ve never found so much mixed in with iron before and I’m just using park 1 standard mode with the horseshoe on. It’s too bad winters here, we have 18 inches of snow on the ground so had to put it away for a few months.

nuggetdog -- I am not sure, but I think what pulltabfelix meant was not notch discrimination, but "tone bins." I only use 50 tones on my Equinox, so I am not familiar with exactly how the 5-tone option works, but I am pretty sure you can set up each of the 5 tones with whatever "bin" of ID numbers you want to (say, one bin for iron, -9 to 0, then one bin for small gold, 0-11, then one bin for nickels, 12-13, one bin for pull tabs and other junk, 14-18, and then one bin for coins -- 18 to 40). Something like that, is what I think he was referring to...
