I'm always in the habit of removing the coil cover and rinsing the machine with fresh water after a trip to the beach.
I spent a couple of days detecting in the water and dry sand recently.
Today when I wanted to swap out the 11" and lower shaft for the 6" I couldn't budge it. Liberal applications of WD40 and finally chucking the bottom of the lower in a vise did the trick.
The inside of the upper was loaded with sand and crystalized salt.
The moral to this story is disassemble the shafts and hose them out thoroughly after a beach visit.
I'm also thinking that a nice smear of cosmoline or wheel bearing grease might help as well.
