So I ran the Alum Foil again today. No EMI from cell phones.
In fact I had my friend sweep his cell within 5 inches all around the detector and no EMI pulses.

Something I had not considered was that shielding the control box
may impede the performance of wireless headphones.

It does sound like you've identified the source of the EMI ingress.
You possibly won't need that entire cover, as just adding some
shielding to the area where the control board is most sensitive
may do the trick.

Definitely an unorthodox approach, but then again, if it works ... moose.gif

My headphones are hard wired connected. Dave

*****Update****

I made an aluminum shield out of tape that goes over my cover and can be removed. I have the same EMI outcome. No EMI from cell phones and NO EMI from that communications equipment.

So I thought nothing ventured nothing gained. I have about three blocks of beach where the EMI forces me to turn the sensitivity down to 20. Also sick of hearing all the cell phones coming at me from 20 feet away so......It was not pretty.

Did not know what to expect. I WAS FLOORED! Not only did I not hear cell phones any more, my EMI issue completely disappeared. I was able to run a solid 22 sensitivity and even 23 with water contact. On the wet sand [no water contact] I ran 24 all the way back. I have NEVER been able to run at 24 on this beach. Your mileage may very, but I will be out with this again today.

The purveyors of the oak island fiction need to apply this tin foil method as well... :laughing7:

Is EMI interference a common issue with the Equinox?

I have seen this same type of EMI issue at 2 locations now. One is in my yard - We have too many electronics or it could be some nearby power cables. I'm going to experiment with the solution posted above.

I have noticed sometimes if I shift from multi-frequency to a single frequency that will allow me to run full sensitivity.

That’s interesting if it works but I though emi entered through the coil?

I’ve found spots where the emi from buried power lines made the area undetectable. I recently discovered switching to 4kHz eliminates the chatter at these spots.

EMI can enter the machine many ways. A coil may be tuned to the freq. of the detector,
but it will also pick up a wide freq. band on both sides of the detectors transmit freq.
It can also enter through the control box if the internal shielding is insufficient, and
it can also be generated internally by the detectors electronics.

Cables, cable connections, etc. are all susceptible to picking up radiated or
conducted EMI.
