Somali pirates seize supertanker loaded with crude

All you have to do is send in decoy ships loaded with commandos. They board, you kill'em, hose the decks off, and they get leery of boarding the next ship (which might also be a decoy.)
Squash, rinse, repeat.
When the risks begin to outweigh the benefits, they'll go pick on something else....

ok, I'll be on topic....

the big tanker was chased out of port by muslim that were gonna take it over.
Then, other muslims say they are gonna attack if the pirates don't give it up.

They say it is wrong to steal from other muslims.

On the new last night. US Navy will not take any action. They say it is too risky.

Go figure.

Other than possible US forces being killed the news reported that the Navy is afraid that ships crew will be killed in the process.

I think the companies that run the tankers should arm them. Some 3inchers and a few Gatling guns should do the trick. Or provide aremed escort.

Just my 2 cents.

I do not have military experience.

It would seem to me, if you owned a very expensive ship, traversing potentially hazardous waters,
an armed guard would be good policy.

The tanker holds 2bn barrels, 100m bucks.
Voyage duration of 4 to 6 weeks.

Perhaps a 3 man contingent to sit 8hr watches.

Seems to me, an M-60 machine gun, at commanding elevation, would more than suffice to deal with evil spirits in small boats wielding AK's and RPG's.

Place one at the bow, stern, and advantageous point on the superstructure.

Cost: Probably 100k per trip. Including a hazardous duty term insurance policy.

My guess is an ad in the New York or London Times could generate a significant response from qualified individuals at even a better price!

Now if they step up to stinger missiles, or Tow missiles, you're probably gonna need .50 caliber to keep 'em a little bit further away. Not too big a deal, but there is more risk. They haven't gotten that far yet.

My guess is Blackwater has a proposition sitting on their desk as we talk about it.

My guess is the shipowners are just a bunch of skinflints and not willing to spring for a nickel they don't absolutely need to. When the insurance for a voyage goes up, they will be forced to change.

...Of course that's all paying top dollar.
Probably get an armed contingent out of afghanistan for your boat a whole lot cheaper!

Twenty goats and three camels for a months work? plus the air fare?

;D

Ha! Ha!

That's GREAT, Jeff!

I'd like to make a little black powder cannon.
...but I'm actually afraid to! I'd probably put too much powder in it. ;D

I really like the sailing ships.
Just don't get the chance to go down to the harbor much, anymore...

Lotsa rope... Them sailing ships got SO MUCH rope on 'em it staggers the imagination!

...there used tobe a single shot .50 caliber for private sailors called the Yacht Boy.
It was expensive way back when.... I wonder if they still make 'em.

Nothing's free in Waterworld!

Associated Press Writer

MUSCAT, Oman (AP) -- Passengers on a luxury cruise liner attacked by pirates in the dangerous waters between Yemen and Somalia said Wednesday they were surprised by the assailants' boldness and described hearing the "Pop! Pop! Pop!" of the pirates' rifles firing at the ship.

Sunday's attack on the nearly 600-foot long M/S Nautica in the Gulf of Aden was the latest evidence that pirates have grown more aggressive, viewing almost any ship on the water as a potential target.

"We didn't think they would be cheeky enough to attack a cruise ship," Wendy Armitage, of Wellington, New Zealand, told The Associated Press shortly after disembarking the ship for a daylong port stop in the Omani capital of Muscat.

Separately, pirates freed a hijacked Yemeni cargo ship and its eight crew members without receiving any ransom, officials said Wednesday. The ship, released Tuesday night, was seized last month in the Arabian Sea.

Interesting, isn't it, Jeff?

"We didn't think they would be so cheeky to fire on a cruise ship... we heard pop pop pop"

Ha! Ha!

They'll certainly think 'cheeky' with 150gr pills flying across the promenade deck!

Ha! Ha!

Such are the adventures of a trans-oceanic voyage, huh?

Don't they shoot skeet off the stern of some of those cruises?
That might be the one I'd go on... with a couple boxes of slugs in my luggage!

Could be the newest thing... a pirate hunting cruise.
LoL!

Where do I sign up? Life is pretty boring (and cold) around here since the snow hit the ground.

Seriously, I'd guess that a heli gunship or F-22 would be a great deterrent to pirates. And as always, the trial should be on the spot to keep the costs down.

The pirates have captured a couple more, released one, and the Indian navy has captured some pirates using a ship borne helicopter.

Really difficult to find news on the MV Faina, the cargo transport with 33 Soviet tanks on it, but there's a claim they've made some sort of deal to release it.

I think they paid ransom on that 100 million load of crude oil, too. Not sure.
